Difference between Laminate and Engineered

What is the difference between Laminate and Engineered wood flooring?

Starting the search for wood flooring and unsure of the different variations available? Continue reading below to get an understanding of the difference between laminate and engineered to help you make an informed decision on your floor.

– Laminate Flooring –

Laminate flooring is highly scratch resistant and generally a more cost effective flooring option. It uses a printed image that emulates real wood, because of this there is now lots of different colors and styles to choose from in laminate. Laminate flooring can last up to 25 years in commercial traffic and requires very little maintenance. Laminate is extremely versatile in application with options even suitable for wet rooms.

Pros:

  • Easy to care and does not require maintenance.
  • Does not fade over time.
  • Extremely scratch and stain resistant.
  • Good for people with allergies.
  • Cost effective to supply and install.
  • Huge range of decors to choose from.

Cons:

  • Repeating patterns ( Although newer laminates have much more variation )
  • Unable to sand back

[ We recommend; Mulveys Laminate Flooring. ]

– Engineered Wood Flooring –

Engineered flooring has become the most favored and practical wood flooring option available and for good reason. It is the go to choice for anyone interested in a real wood floor even surpassing fully solid boards in terms of popularity due to the benefits it provides.

Engineered flooring is manufactured using high quality plywood as a base.
This base adds structural stability to the board which minimizes expansion and contraction. A wooden veneer is then placed on the surface of the board, ranging between 3-6mm which allows the board to be sanded back.

Pros:

  • Natural Timber.
  • Variety of different species and finishes.
  • Sustainable.
  • Warmer underfoot.
  • Custom styles available.
  • Possible to sand back.

Cons:

  • More susceptible to scratching than laminate.
  • Requires maintenance.

Choosing a lacquered or oiled floor finish

Deciding between lacquered or oiled finish?

OK, so you have decided on a wooden floor and color that you love, great! But now you need to make the difficult decision between getting a lacquered or oiled finish. You might be thinking, what is the difference between the two and which one suits me best? Don’t worry, keep reading and I will outline the differences between them in detail and hopefully make your decision much easier.

– UV Lacquered Finish –

lacquered floorWhere lacquered floors excel is in its protective coating and the simplicity that comes with it. Lacquered floors require very little maintenance and protect the wood from surface abrasions, stains and dirt. lacquered floors can be manufactured with a matte, mid-sheen or high gloss lacquer, giving you more flexibility on the style you want to go for weather it be matte and rustic or high gloss and contemporary. Although lacquered floors require almost zero maintenance ( with the exception of cleaning ) they are a more difficult floor finish to repair, usually requiring a professional to screen and re-lacquer the flooring. [ We recommend; Mulveys Traditional Range  or Mulveys Wide Plank Range. ]

– Hard-Wax Oil Finish-

Oiled FloorFinishing your wood floor with a Hard-Wax Oil provides you with an extremely versatile and practical floor finish. Hard-wax oil is applied to the surface of the wood which sinks into the wood and embeds itself deep in the pours, this protects the flooring from within which gives you the ability to spot repair and touch up certain areas as they become worn or damaged on the surface of the floor. Oiled finishes will provide a more natural and unaltered aesthetic to the wood. It is important to note however that oiled floors require a basic maintenance every 12-18 months, this will keep your floor looking new and accentuate any colors in the flooring.  [ We recommend; Mulveys Natural Oiled Wood Floors ]

– Colors –

Both lacquered or oiled floors can come in a range of different colors, although there is some exceptions. Lacquered floors are colored with a stain and then sealed over. This stain will make the color of the floor more uniform, expect to see less variances in the color.
Oiled floors are done slightly different. Colors are applied via the hard-wax oil in the way of a colored pigment, this reacts with the tannin of the wood a combines together to create a unique color. Oiled floors that have had the color altered are more likely to have fluctuations from board to board.

Rustic style Mulveys room guide

Rustic style warmth and timeless beauty

A rustic style is a more popular approach than ever these days, and rightly so, it provides warmth and cosiness giving a truly authentic traditional feel. Mulveys have worked on many projects with skilled interior designers to create that inviting homely look, here are some of our tips to help you achieve that truly rustic look.

– Rustic Style Flooring –

For a rustic theme the go to floor will 9 times out of 10 be a wooden floor. But with so many species and styles of wooden floors what one fits the profile? Well, anything with cracks, knots and heartwood should hit the mark. A very good example of this would be a white oak floor, specifically with an oiled finish. Oiled finishes protect your floor without altering the natural colour and aesthetics of the wood.  [ We recommend; Driftwood or Natural Oiled Floors. ]

– Decor –

When selecting furnishings for a room, large chunky wooden furnishings really bring that rustic style to life. If you can get your hands on anything made from reclaimed materials that would be ideal. The goal here is to avoid any ultra modern fittings, mixing rustic and contemporary styles can really obscure the feel of the room. The species of wood here really depends on the colour scheme you are going for. [ We recommend; www.houzz.ie ]

– Colour Theme –

This generally goes for all styles, not just a rustic style. If you have lots of light coming in a dark colored theme will provide a truly warm and cosy feel, however if you are lacking on natural light consider going for a more neutral theme such as pale blues and soft greys for the walls. Try steer away from black leather couches or anything too modern. Quirky textiles and hand made quilts make for great accessories and throws for couches or beds.
